Month at the Museum

The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, has chosen one lucky Chicagoan to live a month at the museum. Out of 1,500 applicants and five finalists, Kate McGroarty won both the public vote and the judges' vote. From October 20 to November 18, 2010, Kate's mission will be to experience all the fun and education that fits in this historic 14-acre building, living here and reporting her experience to the outside world. There will be plenty of time to explore the Museum and its exhibits after hours, with access to rarely seen nooks and crannies of this 77-year-old institution.

The House of Layers

The sloping Strata House, designed by COOP 15, exposes its layers on the Mercer Island site, extending the earth’s strata skyward. Water filtrates and opens entry of the house, defining an “escape” wing used for entertainment or a quiet retreat. A concrete base supports brick and wood siding, with a metal roof floating cloudlike above. Home to family of an industrial designer, the design's plan is open and glassy and has horizontal layers in its interior details.
